The current method involves using a hard drive which already has Snow Leopard installed to create a partition, move the Lion Installation files to that partition and then boot from that partition for the install.

It's not as simple either as making 2 partitions - the partition scheme applies to the whole drive, not just a single partition. A windows OS will NOT boot from a hard drive that is formatted GUID. For instance, Snow Leopard requires a GUID partition scheme to boot. Then that specific operating system will not boot. If you do not have the correct one (unless there is some kind of trick - which you would find in a guide online). For that matter so do Intel OS X systems and PowerPC OS X systems.
Windows and OS X require a different Partition Map Scheme. The issue is as long as your specs meet the requirements you should be able install Snow Leopard and Windows on the same hard drive (dual boot). Building a CustoMac Hackintosh: Buyer's Guide
